The Abaniko Tres Puntas style was crafted in the 1930s by Mateo D. Estolloso, a Filipino family BI master from the 20th century. This style emerged due to Mateo D. Estolloso’s creation of the multiple reflection fight effect.
In the era of the Second World War, Mateo D. Estolloso, operating as part of a guerrilla unit, faced the necessity of not relying solely on his own blade in those matches. Post-war, he continued refining his style by incorporating elements from the Dumog wrestling classic, specifically room and stall techniques. Shifting from bare arms used in Dumog, Mateo D. Estolloso transitioned to the sticking technique.
Rene R. Tongson embarked on his Arnis teaching journey at the age of 9, and at 15, he began learning from the seasoned professional Roberto Presas. Eventually, Tongson became a disciple of Mateo D. Estolloso.
Currently, Rene R. Tongson is recognized as a pivotal figure in promoting the Abaniko Tres Puntas style.
Tongson’s three-volume publication in the UK comprises two volumes dedicated to the stick and one to the knife. These volumes showcase the applicable style framework not only for weapons but also for bare-handed techniques.
