Description
In 2003, Eddie Bravo, having earned his black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado, inaugurated his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school in Los Angeles, California. Rather than focusing on points, Bravo’s system places an emphasis on preparing students for submission-only fighting competitions. It distinguishes itself by directing its jiu-jitsu training away from the traditional gi, making it one of the pioneer schools to do so. The rationale behind this approach was to incorporate a maximum number of techniques into mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions. During this period, Bravo was employed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and held the viewpoint that highly skilled jiu-jitsu practitioners were not receiving the compensation they deserved. This was primarily attributed to them training in a gi for jiu-jitsu but competing in MMA without it. [4]
Since its inception, 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu has been a subject of controversy; [5] the decision to forgo the gi has sparked criticism from other Jiu-Jitsu schools, [6] and discussions have arisen regarding the applicability of 10th Planet’s techniques, especially their variations of the rubber guard, in the context of MMA. [7] Apart from the original 10th Planet headquarters in Los Angeles, there are now more than 100 schools worldwide. [8] Some of these are well-established Jiu-Jitsu training facilities that have embraced the system as an extension of the art. This style has extended its influence to countries such as Ireland, the United Kingdom, [9] Germany, [10] Sweden, Australia, [11] and Korea.
